Ballistic, Laser, and Electric, these are the three main types of personal firearms you find while in human territory.
While ballistic weapons have changed little in over a thousand years, they are still proven effective across the galaxy. Able to do massive damage against tissue, and moderate damage against armor, while being largely ineffective against shields. They tend to get the job done a lot messier than their more advanced counterparts, unless a shield happens to get in the way.
Laser weaponry tends to fall under two categories. Short, quick, small bursts, able to deal minor tissue damage, minor armor damage, and minor shield damage. The other being slow, long, heavy single shots of condensed laser, often dealing moderate damage against both flesh, armor, and shields alike. They tend to be described as a good middle ground, able to adapt and deal with a wider variety of targets.
Electric weaponry falls under more of a niche category. Usually delivered in short, quick, and violent bursts of energy, they do minor tissue and armor damage, however they are often used to completely destroy shields and any electronics a target may be in possession of.
Armor tends to be a widely dispersed area. Many manufacturers offering several different types, however all tend to do the same thing, with the same materials, to varying degrees of success. Most suits of armor tend to be pressure sealed, offering it's wearer several informational aids, even as far as to transmit their mobiglas data through a HUD.
For ballistic, or kinetic weaponry, most armor manufacturers rely on composite mesh materials. These absorb the majority of a projectiles kinetic energy, protecting the wearer from penetration, as long as the offending round is within the questioned material's rating.
For laser weaponry, ablative plating is the industry standard. Often worn over any composite mesh, they tend to be easily pierced by ballistic weaponry, however the specially designed material absorbs laser fire, burning off the incoming energy with layers of the plating. Plates vary in thickness, determining on the level of protection the wearer wants.
Personal shields are a rather recent breakthrough in technology. While shields have been around for centuries for ships and stations, the ability to have a portable version has only recently hit the market. Personal shields, in their current state, are a deployable device, able to create a flat, varying in size shield for the user. Once deployed it can not be moved unless deactivated. The size of a deployed shield largely depends on the size of the deployment tool, most common ones tend to be a 2-3 foot square, offering the user enough room to duck behind it. As mentioned, shields tend to be fairly effective at protecting against ballistic and laser weaponry, however they are largely susceptible to electric weapons.
